I first saw this movie in 1960/61 in NS Argentia, Nfld, Canada. One of my Navy colleagues was from Dayton, TN where the real trial was held in 1925. Donald F. Scopes was the real defendant and never did pay the fine but he did leave town. I have since learned that this movie was made as a protest against Joe McCarthy and the House UnAmerican Activities Committee. I grew up during "McCarthyism" and believe me oeople had to "watch their mouths" or the wrath of HUAC would come down upon them. In the 1960s I also read in a Catholic magazine that Mr. Scopes was living in Louisiana and had converted to Catholicism. There was also a snide remark about his teaching of evolution. I have recently learned that the enmity against Scopes and the "Monkey Trial" was non existent. Clarence Darrow( defense ) and William Jennings Bryan ( prosecution ) had been friends and the trial revolved mostly around fundamentalism versus science. Brian wanted to deliver his big speech AFTER the trial but never did because he died before he had the chance. Interesting to note that Mr Brian offered to pay Mr Scopes's fine but the conviction was overturned due to a technicality. Anyway, that's the story behind the film, which by the way was SUPERB!!! Some of the oneliners from both sides of the trial had me in stitches. "Alle Achtung" to the writers!!! Fantastic!!!!
